What is going on
The median nerve passes through a narrow tunnel at the wrist. Where it is compressed, patients report tingling in the thumb, index and middle fingers, symptoms that wake them at night, and a hand that feels clumsy. The same nerve can also be irritated further up — at the neck, under the collarbone, or through the forearm muscles.
How massage therapy is commonly used
Treatment follows the whole path: forearm flexors, the wrist, the chest and the neck. Where symptoms are coming from tissue rather than the tunnel itself, patients commonly report improvement. Where a nerve conduction study shows significant compression, massage is comfort care while a physician manages the case.
What to expect over a course of care
Three to four weekly appointments is a reasonable trial. Alongside it, we look at keyboard and tool position, grip time and whether a night splint has been discussed with your doctor.
