What is going on
In a collision the head is thrown through a range the neck did not prepare for, straining muscles, ligaments and joint capsules. Symptoms often arrive a day or two later, once the initial adrenaline has passed, which is why patients frequently tell us they felt fine at the scene.
Common findings after a crash:
- Neck stiffness and difficulty turning to check a blind spot
- Headaches starting at the base of the skull
- Aching across the upper back and between the shoulder blades
- Jaw tension, particularly after an airbag deployment
- Disturbed sleep and difficulty concentrating in the first weeks
How massage therapy is commonly used
Early care focuses on gentle work to reduce guarding and restore comfortable movement — not deep pressure into an acutely injured neck. As symptoms settle, treatment progresses to more specific work through the neck, upper back, chest and jaw.
Current guidance for whiplash-associated disorders favours staying active and returning to normal movement early. Massage therapy is commonly used to make that easier, and is delivered alongside whatever your physician and physiotherapist have recommended.
What a session looks like
Your first appointment is longer on conversation: what happened, how you were seated, where the impact came from, what you have not been able to do since. We document all of it, because ICBC files benefit from a clear record from visit one.
Treatment in the first weeks is often lighter than patients expect and may be limited to 30 or 45 minutes. That is deliberate. Progress is measured by what you can do — reversing out of a parking stall, sleeping through the night — not by how hard the massage was.
What to expect over a course of care
ICBC pre-approves 12 massage therapy sessions in the first 12 weeks after a crash, which supports roughly one or two appointments a week early on, tapering as you improve. Most patients recover well within that window; where symptoms persist, your therapist can support a request for further treatment.
We coordinate with your other providers as a matter of course and write to your claim when the file needs it.
